A lot came out of Paris Games week, but for me, nothing was more exciting than The Last of Us 2 trailer. Which was brutal, by the way. I mean, it's not exactly like The Last of Us was a happy game- it was full of violence. But at the heart of it, The Last of Us was a story about love. Joel fighting for Ellie, Ellie fighting for Joel. Oh man, let's not get into the feelings.
So it was a surprise for me when our two protagonists were nowhere to be found. Instead, within minutes we're faced with a parade of violence. Hanging, lifeless bodies, arrows through faces, and let's not forget about 'wing clipping'. Honestly, I couldn't sit through it without squirming.
While it's not what I expected, let me just say I am very excited. Ellie and Joel have already appeared in the reveal trailer, so I'm happy Naughty Dog decided to show us a new aspect of the upcoming game.
The trailer is getting some heat for being too violent, but I think it's important to remember that the world established in the first game was unforgiving and cruel.
It forced Ellie and Joel to make impossible decisions, and, in my opinion, it set us up for a more violent second game. Yes, the trailer was brutal- but that's what I want. Ellie has grown up in this world, she has been hurt, used, and lied to. So, for me, it's unsurprising that The Last of Us 2 is set to be darker than its predecessor.
As long as there's a compelling and emotionally gut-wrenching story to go with it, I want the violence.
The Last of Us 2 doesn't have a release date yet, but is expected to drop sometime in 2018.
