Step aboard me hearties, ad ventures awaits upon the high seas! Danger, plunder, and the all important booty is a plenty in Sea of Thieves, the new multiplayer pirate adventure game developed by Rare and published by Microsoft Studios.
Sea of Thieves as available now on Xbox One and PC via Xbox Play Anywhere.
Take to the seas in you very own ship and assemble your motley crew of scallywags to explore the wide open treasure filled waters as your own fully customize-able pirate.
Sea of Thieves doesn't really have a set in stone story as of writing, but what it does have are a plethora of different and exciting voyages for you and up to four of your crew to complete, ranging from simply delivering goods to NPCs, to battling skeletal pirates, to hunting all available islands, coves, and caves for buried treasure. This game has no limit to what you can accomplish along your journey to become the best pirate around.
It has been a long time since I have had a game make me look at the clock and ask myself "wow has it really been five hours? I thought I was only playing for one".
This game does an amazing job of getting you immersed in the world, simply by dropping you in with no overblown exposition dumps or clunky tutorials. All you get is some good old fashioned "here is a hub, there is a ship, get out there into this vast open world and be the best pirate this game has ever seen.
Everything about this game, beside the combat (which needs some work to make it feel less slow and clunky) is expertly done. The openness of the world embraces expert multi-tasking (especially if you are taking on the world alone) and navigation skills to get from place to place, while exploring the world to its fullest.
As a huge fan of Assassin's Creed 4 Black Flag (the best installment in the series) I absolutely love the aesthetic of this game, the world has Rare's signature cartoony look an tongue in cheek approach that fans have come to love. Also the water in Sea of Thieves is hands down the best ever in gaming and has to be seen to be believed just how magnificent water can be,
But apart from the stunning water, the world of Sea of Thieves is just so beautiful and filled with so many great sights, I struggle to put it into words. The best example I can give is that when you are plundering and running amuck just take a moment (especially at dusk) and look around at the horizon, you will not regret it.
Sea shanties, need I say more. What? Okay I'll go on, this game has a delightful soundtrack of sea shanties delivered by Hurdy Gurdies and accordions, paired along with terrific world building music which are sure to immerse you this unique world.
Sea of Thieves also contains a host of realistic sea sounds! featuring all your favorites like waves crashing against the hull of my vessel, cannons firing your direction, and the sound of me crying and cursing the pirates that sunk my beloved ship The Rusty Boudoir.
As you can tell, I love this game. While there is a lot of post launch support that needs to be added to take it to the next level, the sheer joy I have while playing this game with friends is really rewarded by the gameplay, music, and gorgeous visuals on offer.
I think it's safe to say that if you are looking for me between now and the release of Red Dead Redemption 2, you'll find me in Sea of Thieves, plundering and hunting booty aboard The Rusty Boudoir.
