It's time to escape, ready your plans, use your wits and put it all together to break free.
The Escapist 2 is out now on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, from developer Mouldy Toof Studios and publisher Team 17.
The Escapist 2 doesn't have a story in the traditional sense, instead all you are told is you are in prison and you don't want to be there anymore. This can make playing the game kind of boring if you are hoping for a gritty prison story, so I think the game would have been stronger with more exposition at the start.
While the story of The Escapist 2 is rather shallow, the gameplay is the complete opposite. The game gives you an insane amount of freedom. When the player is placed inside a prison, they can literally do anything they want to escape.
Another great gameplay feature of The Escapist 2 is its perfect use of seamless online multiplayer. Players can join and leave their friends prison without any interruption to the game, and after playing this game for some time with a colleague, I can say with confidence that multiplayer mode is where The Escapist 2 stands out.
The Escapist 2 carries over the eight bit, pixel art style from the first game, which goes well with the music and overall feel that the game is aiming for. The main improvement is a new customization system, which features over 20 different combinations for your character to look fabulous in while you plan your escape.
The soundtrack has a modern eight bit sound that fits the feel of the game itself. Despite this, after a while of being stuck in a prison trying and failing to escape, it can really get on your nerves (unless you like that).
The Escapist 2 is a fun, yet brutally hard game. I have spent what feels like an actual prison sentence, trying to bust out of each prison. The gameplay is simple and easy to pick up and play, the seamless online multiplayer in my opinion is the stand out of feature of the game because of how it makes playing with friends easier than most other co-op games ever have. In my opinion that is a selling point in itself.
